Glossary Of Terms
A list of commonly used terms, acronyms and abbreviations:
| Term |
Meaning |
| IC/OOC |
In-Character/Out-Of-Character
When playing at Carnipelago, you create a character with which you interact and explore.
This character is a fantasy being with only knowledge of what he or she sees or has
experienced in their fantasy background. What's on TV tonight on Planet Earth, who's just called
you on your real-life phone, the condition of your apartment and your real-life pet's needs
are not In Character knowledge. To communicate those types of things to your fellow players, use an
OOC command like page or ooc or take yourself off of the IC
area by typing +ooc. How many clams you've spent at Carniville Park or have
in your account at the Carnipelago Imperial Bank, directions to your character's hotel room,
and the name of the current Empress or leaders of the Four Tribes are examples of IC or In-Character knowledge.
Say, pose, and whisper are considered IC or
In-Character forms of communication. It's considered very bad etiquette to use things learned
out-of-character to your in-character advantage.
|
| ICly |
While in-character. |
| OOCly |
While out-of-character. |
| RL (IRL) |
Real Life (In Real Life). Out-of-character stuff. |
| Rooms/Exits |
In any MUSH or MUX, the game is divided into separate small areas
where people interact. The place where you are located is called a room
(whether it's ICly indoors or outdoors). Rooms are connected by exits. Exits are
usually entrances, too, but Exit is the official term for them.
Rooms and Exits are separate "things". An exit can be picked up and moved or
linked to a different room. And a room can have no exits. |
| RP |
Role play. In-character interaction. |
| TP |
TinyPlot. An imaginery scenario or plot involving two or more IC characters. |
| TS |
TinySex. Sexual role play. |
Using @mail
Carnipelago MUX has an internal mail system that allows you to
communicate with other players when they are not currently connected or
when you don't wish to disturb them or when you want to share more
detailed types of communication and ideas. @mail is considered Out-Of-Character
unless expressly stated in the beginning of the message. Type help @mail
for a list of @mail-related help files.
To read your mail:
| @mail |
Typing @mail by itself, will give you a list of your incoming mail messages. |
| @mail <message #> |
Will let you read a message. |
Writing mail:
| @mail <person>=<subject> |
Will start a message to <person> with the subject of <subject> |
| @mail/reply <message #> |
Will start a reply to message number #. |
Once you've started a message, you enter lines of text to it, prepending the text with a hyphen (-), like this:
-Line One...
-Line two...
-Line three...
To send the message, simply type two hyphens on a single line by themselves.
--
@mail is a very robust and full-featured system. Check out help @mail for more.
Comsys
Carnipelago also has a global communication system called a comsys or comsystem.
This system allows you to chat publicly and OOCly with other players, regardless
of their location. The system is made up of several channels, with the Public
channel as the default. Each channel has an alias through which you send your messages.
For example, the Public channel alias is pub.
Participation in the Carnipelago comsys channels is purely optional, but can help you
get to know some of the other players while not role-playing or building. Some people
hate it, some people love it.
| Command |
Effect |
| comlist |
Shows a list of your comsys channels and whether you're currently on them or not. |
| pub on |
[Public] Yourname has joined this channel. (Turns on the Public channel.) |
| pub Hello! |
[Public] Yourname says, "Hello!" |
| pub :waves! |
[Public] Yourname waves! |
| pub off |
[Public] Yourname has left this channel. (Shuts off the Public channel.) |
| help comsys |
Shows you more helpfiles for the comsys than you will ever conceivably need. |
Descriptions
The look command is probably one of the most important commands on any
MUSH or MUX and Carnipelago is no exception. Many things about people, objects, exits and rooms
can be learned only through looking at their descriptions.
It helps to put some thought into your own description to aid others in their attempt to
engage and interact with you in role-play.
To create a description for yourself, do this: @desc me=<a description of what my character looks like.>
To make your description (or any description) more readable, you can insert line breaks, tabs, and color using the following constructs.
| %r |
Inserts a line break. |
| %t |
Inserts a tab space. |
| %b |
Inserts a single space. Usually not needed, but can be useful. |
| %ch<text>%cn |
Highlights <text>. Only works for some MU clients and if the person is set to see colors. |
| %xh<text>%xn |
Does the same as above. |
| @set me=ansi |
Set yourself to see colors. See help ansi codes and help ansi substitution for more help with using color. |
| @set me=!ansi |
Set yourself to not see colors. |
